Edited by Emily Letourneau. Text by John Corbett. Interview by Jim Dempsey

Join us for a conversation between artist Jimmy Wright and John Corbett, writer and co-owner of Corbett vs. Dempsey gallery, in celebration of the publication of Jimmy Wright’s Bathhouse, Meatpacking District and the Dream Cards: New York Underground 1973 – 1990.

Born in rural Kentucky, artist Jimmy Wright settled in New York in the mid 1970s and immediately dove headlong into the city’s edgy gay nightlife, documenting his observations of legendary clubs and bathhouses, as well as street and bathroom scenes. Working from memory, he composed these graphite, gouache, ink, and watercolor works on paper directly after returning from a night on the town, and in them he captures something both poignant and rough about the private scenarios. This book compiles these drawings and paintings for the first time, casting an eye back on a essential moment in the evolution of downtown, a period in which sexual exploration and gay identity were still often shadowy activities carried out in the safety of underground environs.
